Stephen is a partner in Kennedys’ London office. He qualified in England and Wales in 2012 and is a leading defendant catastrophic injury practitioner who supports the firm’s serious and catastrophic injury group.

Stephen advises on motor, public liability, employers’ liability and sports related claims resulting in serious and catastrophic injuries. He manages cases of the utmost severity including brain injury, spinal injury and amputations. Stephen also acts in relation to in fatal accident claims and is often instructed to act in defence of high value, complex and sensitive occupational stress claims.

Stephen has a particular specialism in the defence of amputation claims and is the Kennedys lead for those claims. He is also a member of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) which has enabled him to forge links with leading professionals within the prosthetics industry and keep fully up to date with the latest technological / surgical developments which can positively influence the rehabilitation process.

His personal caseload is comprised of reserves in excess of £150 million at any one time including claims with an international element involving jurisdictional / applicable law disputes or considerations.

Stephen is currently acting in the high profile sports concussion litigation involving multiple Claimant’s.

Stephen regularly presents in the UK and abroad on a range of topics associated with complex claims. He is a co-author and editor of a number of publications, including Kennedys' Claims Handling Law and Practice Guide and catastrophic claims guide.

He has been individually recognised by The Legal 500 every year since 2018 initially as a ‘Rising Star’ and more recently as a ‘Next Generation Partner’. Stephen has also been individually nominated by respondents in the 2023 Gracechurch London Market Insurance Law Monitor as delivering outstanding service.

  • Secker v Fairhill Property Services – successfully defended a claim involving a tetraplegic claimant and secured an order that the claimant pay the defendant’s costs on an indemnity basis.
  • Settled a lower limb amputation case involving an 18 year old Claimant within 14 months of the accident.
  • Settled a complex upper limb amputation case within 16 months of the accident.
  • Acted for Insurers in defence of an eight figure pleaded claim brought by an international news correspondent injured during an assignment in Israel and settled the claim for approximately 6% of the pleaded claim.
  • Settled a complex and high profile occupational stress claim for approximately 13% of the pleaded claim.
  • Successfully advised insurer client on a potential automatism defence which led to the claim not being pursued.
