Kennedys boosts global insurance offering with new partner hire

We are pleased to have strengthened our London team with the appointment of partner Simon Durkin, formerly at Weightmans.

Simon has almost 20 years’ experience in the insurance industry and specialises in policy coverage and related disputes, acting exclusively for (re)insurers in the UK and globally, including in the US, Spain, Germany and Japan.

His specialisms include property and non-injury casualty losses, product liability and recall claims, public liability claims and disputes involving contractors’ all risks policies. Simon’s experience spans a broad range of sectors including construction, automotive, energy, electronics, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food and drink.

Simon, who is named as a recommended lawyer for insurance and reinsurance litigation work (London) in this year’s Legal 500, is also experienced in policy drafting, liability defence work and pursuing subrogated recoveries. He recently created an innovative suite of insurance products covering first-party losses and business interruption, healthcare, cyber, contract works, and professional and management liability.

Ingrid Hobbs, partner and head of the complex casualty coverage team, said: “Simon’s experience and strong reputation make him a natural fit for our team and a real asset in helping us grow our international practice. We are delighted to welcome Simon into the practice.”

Nick Thomas, senior partner, added: “This is a particularly exciting opportunity as we look to drive forward our plans for growth, both in the London market and globally.

We are committed to delivering the best for our clients and Simon’s arrival will ensure that we continue to deliver a first-class service to our clients around the world.

Commenting on his appointment, Simon said: “I’m thrilled to be joining a firm which has such an established and respected name in the insurance industry.

“I greatly enjoy the variety of my work, acting for different clients across a broad range of sectors on complex cases, particularly when those cases involve jurisdictions outside the UK.

“I’m really looking forward to helping Kennedys continue to grow its global reputation.”

Simon’s appointment is the latest in a series of insurance industry specialists hired to boost our international offering including Mauricio Carvajal-Garcia who recently joined the Colombia office.

We also announced a record round of promotions earlier this year, which saw 86 associates progress to senior associate positions and the appointment of 40 legal directors.
