Dog strikes: man's best friend or liability burden?

This webinar has now taken place, but please complete our form if you would like to be sent a copy of the recording.

We are delighted to be hosting the third webinar in our animals and agricultural forum series on Tuesday 10 January 2023.

This webinar will consider the complex area of law involving liability for an injury caused by an animal knocking over a claimant. This usually involves dogs, and less rarely cattle.

Our speakers will discuss:

  • The Animals Act and negligence claims- is there a difference in approach?
  • Is a dog strike likely to cause “severe injury” to satisfy the Animals Act?
  • Is a dog running uncontrollably or having a propensity to collide with a person a “characteristic” under the Act or is this “normal” behaviour?
  • The use of expert evidence in defending claims.
  • The weight of newspaper/social media material.
  • The trends in recent case law of dog strike claims and recapping key cases in this area, covering:
    - Whippey v Jones [2009] EWCA Civ 452
    - Hunt v Wallis [1994] PIQR P128
    - Cooke v Jackson [1999] 11 WLUK 959
    - Fry v Morgan [2006] CLY 192
    - Addis v (1) Campbell and (2) Leaman [2011] EWCA Civ 906
    - Menzies v Doggy Day Care [2021]
