Fernando Hurtado de Mendoza is a partner in Kennedys’ Lima office and the Global Deputy Head of Kennedys Sustainability and ESG practice group, where he leads ESG initiatives across Latin America and contributes to the global strategy of the firm on this field.
Fernando is qualified as lawyer in Peru before Lima’s Bar Association (2005) as an arbitrator before Lima’s Chamber of Commerce on transport and insurance matters.
He specializes in (re)insurance law, aviation and corporate/commercial law and advises insurers and corporates on integrating sustainability and ESG strategies into their business operations, helping them navigate the complex ESG regulatory landscape, ensuring compliance and fostering long-term and profitable growth.
He regularly acts as counsel to local and foreign clients from different sectors in an array of commercial and corporate matters, related to the initiation, continuation, expansion and exit of local operations, including the advice to Asian, European and North American investors for their potential entry into Peru.
On (re)insurance, he advises clients on regulatory and contractual aspects. In addition, he has broad experience advising re(insurers) on all types of property and casualty claims, and on structure, implementation and distribution of insurance products in the local market. He represents and advises foreign reinsurers and reinsurance brokers.
Fernando has recognized experience in aviation law, being continuously appointed as local expert to act on behalf of aircraft’s owners, lessors and international financing institutions for a set of transactions, in relation to the acquisition, sale and use of aircraft in Peru and Latin America by main regional carriers, as well as to aircraft repossession. He also advises air carriers on multiple civil aviation regulatory and corporate matters for commercial and private transport of passengers and cargo. Likewise, he continuously receives instructions from re(insurers) to handle claims related to aviation accidents and incidents.
Fernando is former vice-president of the Cross-Border Investment Committee of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association and chairs the ESG Committee of the association, an organization with more than 1,500 lawyer members from around the globe.
He is vice-president of the Peruvian Association of Insurance Law, secretary of the reinsurance committee of the Iberoamerican Chapter of Insurance Law and professor of the Insurance Regulation Program of Universidad ESAN. Fernando is the Chair of the Aviation and Aerospace Law Committee of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association.
