Kennedys Bermuda Partner celebrates Queen’s Counsel appointment

We are thrilled to confirm that Alex Potts, a partner in our Bermuda office, has officially been appointed as a Queen’s Counsel of England and Wales, becoming the first ever Bermuda-based barrister to be appointed as such under the current appointment system which was introduced in 2005.

Alex received his Letters Patent from the Queen at a recent ceremony before the Lord Chancellor in Westminster Hall in London, which was followed by ceremonial court hearings before the Lord Chief Justice and the Court of Appeal of England and Wales, the Chancery Division, and the Commercial Court.

Alex is dual-qualified as an English barrister and a Bermuda barrister. His appointment as an English Queen’s Counsel is a ground-breaking achievement for a member of the Bermuda Bar, since it is unprecedented for a Bermuda-based advocate to be elevated to the rank of Queen’s Counsel under the English appointment process. His appointment has been made in recognition of his excellence as a world class advocate both in court proceedings and in international arbitrations, including Bermuda Form insurance arbitrations.

Commenting on his appointment, Alex Potts QC said:

I am extremely grateful to my colleagues, clients, referees, as well as the Bermuda judiciary and the Bermuda Bar more generally, for the professional support and opportunities that I have received over the course of my career. I look forward to assisting a wide range of clients in the years to come, as well as supporting and promoting the jurisdiction of Bermuda more generally.

More positive news for our office in Bermuda, which was officially announced in October, is that it has also been recognised as a leading legal practice in Bermuda by a number of independent legal directories.

Chambers' Global 2018 edition has identified us as one of the top tier firms in Bermuda for dispute resolution and insurance/reinsurance work, while The Legal 500 2018 has identified us as a market-leading firm for dispute resolution, insurance/reinsurance, and trusts/private client work. Who’s Who Legal has also ranked us as a market-leading firm for insurance and reinsurance, and asset recovery.

All three independent directories have also identified our three partners in Bermuda, Mark Chudleigh, Nick Miles and Alex Potts QC as market-leading lawyers.

Mark Chudleigh, who heads our office in Bermuda, said:

We are thrilled with the recognition bestowed on Alex individually and on our firm in general. As Bermuda’s economy becomes increasingly international and diversified, and as the marketplace for legal services also becomes increasingly competitive, we look forward to providing the highest quality of service to our local and international clients, while supporting Bermuda’s efforts to maintain its position as a leading international financial centre.
