Kennedys proudly supports AXA UK's new report and call to Government

We are proud to be supporting AXA UK as a signatory of its letter to the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. The letter issued follows the publication of AXA UK’s newly launched report ‘Building for the future: A Roadmap to Sustainable Development’, which sets out recommendations for the Government to improve sustainability of the built environment and support the UK’s resilience to emerging risks driven by climate change such as flooding and extreme weather.

As stated in AXA UK’s press release: “The letter calls on the new Government to put sustainability, longevity, safety and resilience at the heart of its plans to get Britain working, building, and growing again. It warns that without reforming building regulations and policy, the Government risks exposing people across the country to a host of economic and social costs associated with poorly designed, insufficiently regulated, and ageing buildings. These include higher-than-average energy bills, lower home resale value, and increased vulnerability to extreme weather events.”

Paul Lowe, partner, who represented Kennedys as a signatory of the letter, was also a key contributor to the report.

The key recommendations of the report include:

  • Clearly defining sustainable buildings
  • Tackling the affordability of sustainability
  • Creating living, learning buildings
  • Improving education and training
  • Creating a resilience-based regulatory framework

This activity is complementary to Kennedys’ own engagement with the Government on issues that matter to our clients and the release of our report to the market in July – ‘Rewriting the risk: addressing the challenge of climate change’. The report explored the role of the insurance industry in building wider understanding about climate-related risks and in mitigating against those risks by promoting resilient measures, climate innovation and collaboration with government, as supported by the AXA report. It canvassed the views of insurance industry experts and citizens from a wide range of markets.
