Joanne Kingsland

Joanne is a legal director based in the Newcastle office of Kennedys. She qualified in 1989.
Joanne joined Kennedys in May of this year as part of the newly formed public sector, abuse and specialist liability team having worked for many years in this area of law. Her work involves representing local authorities, care and health providers and schools both directly and through their insurers in a wide variety of claims involving allegations of historical abuse, alleged failings by children’s and adult’s social care, data breaches and alleged breaches of the Human Rights Act.
In addition to her legal practice, Joanne has been involved in delivering bespoke training on such subjects as disclosure, limitation and vicarious liability.
Joanne supervises a team of lawyers based in the Newcastle office.
She is a member of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers

Work highlights
- Joanne represented one of the local authority defendants in the claim of A v Hoare and Others which was a landmark decision made by the House of Lords in 2008 and changed the way that limitation is dealt with in historical abuse cases.
- Joanne also represented the local authority in the Court of Appeal case of Dunn v Durham County Council [2012] which determined that details of third parties may be disclosable if their information is relevant to issues in the claim.
- Joanne represented Durham again in the substantive claim of Dunn v Durham Council when the court refused permission for the claimant to proceed on limitation grounds.
