Lithium ion batteries in the logistics process – the risks in transit and storage

We are delighted to be hosting the first joint presentation by BACS and Kennedys on Tuesday 14 November where we will be discussing lithium ion batteries and the risks in transit and storage.

Lithium ion batteries are featuring in the news with increasing frequency due to them being the cause of many fires. When large quantities of these electronic items are stored or shipped in close proximity, the consequences of a fault, environmental conditions or mishandling of the batteries can be catastrophic. Recent fires in vessels carrying electronic cars have grabbed the attention of the media and the insurance market. As demand grows for larger batteries holding ever greater charge and the technology behind these batteries develops, the risks presented to the supply chain change.

In this presentation, aimed at those involved in the logistics process, cargo insurers and liability insurers of carriers and forwarders involved in the carriage of electronic items, we shall consider these developing and changing risks and also discuss:

  • The different types of lithium ion batteries and the methods of carriage and storage deployed.
  • The regulatory regimes in place when handling such goods.
  • The contractual issues arising from the carriage and storage of lithium ion batteries.
