Kennedys continues Americas expansion with new office in Mexico

We are pleased to announce that we are continuing our expansion in Latin America with a new office in Mexico City and the appointment of three new partners to lead it.

Kennedys Mexico has opened in response to client demand for support and advice in the region’s second largest insurance market after Brazil. It becomes our fifth new office to open in Latin America in six months, following Brazil and Peru in July and Chile and Colombia in August – all of which are supported by our Miami office which services clients in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The office will provide clients with both complex and high-volume claims litigation and (re)insurance coverage advice, including general liability, energy, property, construction and engineering, mining, marine, aviation, Directors’ & Officers’ and medical malpractice.

Mexican-born Michael Hennessy, who relocates from our Miami office, becomes a partner and will head the complex claims and (re)insurance coverage practice in the Mexico office.
Michael is joined by two lateral hire partners: Alberto Torres Martínez, who joins from his own firm Bufete Torres Martínez & Asociados, and Gerardo Plata Iturralde, who has 25 years’ experience working in-house at leading insurers in Mexico and in private practice.

Gerardo will lead the medical malpractice and marine practice in the new office, with his appointment boosting Kennedys Marine, which came about as a result of our merger with Waltons & Morse in November.

Alberto, who also has over 25 years’ experience in insurance and surety, will lead the defence litigation practice in Mexico. He acts for (re)insurers and is a certified mediator with the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions.
Alberto, Michael and Gerardo will be supported by six associates, two trainees and a legal secretary.

Our expansion continues apace in Latin America and I am delighted to offer our clients global expertise locally in this insurance stronghold. Our Mexican office is critical to Kennedys’ ongoing success in Latin America and adds to our considerable capabilities across the region. Our combination of global and local knowledge is valued greatly by our clients, who have influenced our decision to open there. I wish the team all the very best.
Mexico is the second largest insurance market in Latin America and continues to grow, with a number of our global (re)insurance clients in this jurisdiction. This development in Mexico City enables us to provide a better service to our (re)insurer clients who will benefit greatly from the team’s specialist local knowledge. The relocation of Michael from Miami to Mexico also provides our clients with continuity.

Our international strategy remains focused on helping clients develop in jurisdictions with high growth potential. The five newly established offices in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru are complemented by formal associations in Argentina and Brazil, and established relationships in the rest of the Latin American and Caribbean region.

Earlier this week we firm increased its presence in Europe through a formal association with Italian law firm Studio Legale Rinaldi Associati (RASS).
