Samantha Lunn - Day in the life

Trainee Solicitor, Manchester

Samantha is a Trainee Solicitor in our Manchester office, currently working within our employers liability and public liability team.

I begin drafting a client report. This is the first time that I have done this, so I spend some time reviewing the file, making notes and reading precedents beforehand.

Morning

If I am heading into the office, I wake up just before seven o’clock in order to ensure that I can get to the office in good time.

8:45

I greet my colleagues and then head to the kitchen for a cup of tea – the first of many – before sitting down at my desk.

I will begin my day by reviewing emails and amending my plan accordingly. If any urgent tasks have come through, I will attend to those first. Afterwards, I will proceed to work through my plan for the day.

9:30

I have been tasked to complete two separate instructions to counsel and send these to the file handlers for their review before lunch.

I then telephone a client in order to ascertain the position regarding witness evidence.

Lunch

Myself and the other trainees will usually head out for lunch. As the weather is improving, we are currently enjoying sitting outside in the sun.

Upon returning from lunch, I check my emails to see if any new tasks have come through.

14:00

I begin drafting a client report. This is the first time that I have done this, so I spend some time reviewing the file, making notes and reading precedents beforehand.

I speak to my colleagues about the report and they kindly provide me with advice.

16:00

I spend some time finalising any work that has almost been completed. I also email my supervisor to inform them of any material updates that have occurred throughout the day.

Evening

I head home and have dinner with my boyfriend. I spend the evening finishing the grouting in my bathroom – fun!
