Julian is Joint Managing Partner of the Singapore office. He is dual-qualified in Hong Kong in 2003 and England and Wales in 1999.

He advises insurers / reinsurers, financial institutions, pharmaceutical companies and professionals including doctors, dentists, surveyors and accountants.

Julian has extensive experience across a number of areas including; financial lines, D&O, fidelity, BBB, professional indemnity, trade credit & political risk; product liability; business interruption and property claims; and contentious and non-contentious matters for the healthcare industry including regulatory, clinical negligence and clinical trials.

He regularly speaks at industry events and has been recognised as one of the top legal practitioners in Singapore for Insurance Law practitioners by Best Lawyers 2021. He is consistently ranked as a leading individual by Chambers Asia Pacific and clients describe him as being "a very positive and pragmatic individual". Another states, "He has been in this market a long time; he covers many bases and does it well."

Julian contributed to the writing of Kennedys' 'Global forecast 2024: Evolving insurance risks' report, published in January 2024.

Work highlights

  • Acting as coverage counsel in high profile claims against directors and offices for false and misleading statements to the Singapore Stock Exchange. This case involved a highly publicised investigation by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau, and prosecutions of high profile individuals from the Singapore business and legal community, giving rise to a multi-million-dollar claim under the company’s D&O policy.
  • Advising on coverage under a fraud policy for unauthorised trading losses of circa US$ 60 million.  Detailed policy liability investigations and advice giving rise to co-insurers denying liability under the Policy.  Successfully defended the denial of liability at arbitration.
  • Acting as coverage counsel in a claim, under BBB Policy, in the region of US$40 million against a leading Malaysian Bank following the non-repayment of Bonds. Monitoring Malaysian Defence Counsel in order to advise reinsurers in relation to policy liability and quantum.
  • Acting as coverage counsel in relation to damage claims under a multinational program.  Dealing with issues between local and global policies.
  • Providing coverage advice and successfully defending action by insured under a trade credit policy following the rejection of a claim for US$14m.  Matters involved possible factoring and suspicious trades between entities in Singapore, Taiwan and USA.
