Letters of Indemnity in shipping and international trade seminar

We are delighted to be hosting a seminar focusing on the role of Letters of Indemnity in shipping and international trade and the issues arising when a cargo has been "misdelivered" by a carrier.

While the practice of delivering of cargo against provision of an LOI (where bills of lading are not available) in shipping and international trade is widespread, the legal implications of issuing an LOI may not always be well understood.

The Kennedys marine team has acted in a number of important cases involving LOI disputes including The “Jag Ravi”, The “Chang Hang Guang Rong”, and most recently in 2022, The “Miracle Hope”. In this seminar, Partner, Karnan Thirupathy and Legal Director, Charlene Sim will share their experiences and engage in discussions focusing on the following key topics:

  • What role does the LOI play in shipping and international trade?
  • What are the standard forms of LOIs and how are they invoked?
  • Key considerations in deciding whether to accept (or to issue) an LOI.
  • Practical considerations when a misdelivery claim has been made against the carrier.
