Mainland China’s new Personal Information Protection Law came into effect on 1 November 2021, and represents mainland China’s first broad-based comprehensive information privacy law. The Law is of interest to many Australian businesses, because it applies to data processing activities carried out outside of mainland China if they are for the purpose of offering products or services to, or analysing and assessing the behaviour of, individuals located in mainland China. While the Law is similar in some respects to Australia’s Privacy Act or Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation, it has a number of unique features which pose compliance challenges.
During this webinar Nicholas Blackmore will provide a guided tour of the Law and its most important features for Australian businesses.
