Office for Product Safety and Standards: updated service standards

On 6 January 2022, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) published their updated service standards, clarifying the enforcement role of the OPSS and how they regulate businesses producing and selling products in the UK.

The updated service standards reflect and implement the proposals outlined in the draft service standards which were presented to interested stakeholders in September 2021, including:

  • Confirming the general role of the OPSS as national regulator in respect of product safety.
  • Placing an increased emphasis on promoting innovation.
  • Increased and clarified powers in respect of online platforms, customs/border checks, and advisory functions for businesses with product compliance obligations.
The robust measures outlined in the finalised service standards cements the role of the OPSS as a progressive regulator in line with the changing landscape of product safety.
