Mariya is an associate in the Basking Ridge office. Coming from a strong background in general automobile insurance law, Mariya joined the firm in July of 2016. She specializes in automobile insurance defense for New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company, focusing on PIP/No Fault and subrogation disputes in which she frequently serves as defense counsel.

Additionally, Mariya is a member of Kennedys’ United States Marine Practice Group, assisting in maritime matters. She also assists in employment coverage and litigation defense.

Prior to joining the firm, Mariya served six years as in-house counsel for Mercury Insurance Company, focusing primarily on arbitration disputes, and also worked in an insurance defense firm representing national insurance companies in claims disputes. She is licensed to practice in New Jersey and New York.

Mariya is a graduate of The College of New Jersey and George Mason University School of Law. She has interned and clerked at the AARP, EEOC, and the Lupus Foundation. She is a native Russian speaker who enjoys playing the piano in her free time.

Work highlights

  • Successfully argued before the Appellate Division of New Jersey that statute of limitations for subrogation is trigger by the specific PIP application requested by the insurer and not a generic application.
  • Successfully argued before the Appellate Division of New Jersey that reformation of an automobile policy to provide PIP coverage in excess of policy limits exceeds the authority of an arbitrator.
