Kennedys launches ‘virtual defence lawyer’ in Australia

We are pleased to confirm that we are launching our ground-breaking virtual defence lawyer, KLAiM, in Australia.

Using the collective knowhow of hundreds of our lawyers from around the globe, KLAiM allows clients to deal with litigation without needing to use a lawyer.

The web-based platform provides built-in templates and guidance notes that navigate the user through the litigation process via a straightforward workflow, with an automated diary and traffic light system. KLAiM also auto-populates and generates all the relevant court documentation.

We are excited to bring our philosophy and our own technology to clients in Australia as the factors that make KLAiM so appealing in the UK, such as reducing legal spend and speeding up the life-cycle of claims, are just as relevant to our clients in other jurisdictions.

KLAiM originated in the UK and clients there are settling in excess of 80% of their claims using the system, without the need for a lawyer at all. We have adapted the KLAiM platform to work in international markets including the USA, Bermuda, Hong Kong, and now Australia.

For Australia, we have built this latest version of KLAiM around Queensland’s Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002 (QLD), although it can be readily adapted for other states and jurisdictions.

The Australian extension of KLAiM is built to allow rapid development for all Australian jurisdictions and we are already seeing significant interest from local insurer clients.

Richard West, Partner and Head of Innovation, says: “Innovations such as KLAiM are central to our core principle of helping clients to use lawyers only when they really need to.

“Although seemingly counter-intuitive for a law firm, we believe that this approach offers business benefits for both our clients and ourselves. This has helped us to continue to build relationships with our clients and gain additional market share; while also helping our clients to rapidly reduce their reliance on lawyers. We are excited to bring our philosophy and our own technology to clients in Australia as the factors that make KLAiM so appealing in the UK, such as reducing legal spend and speeding up the life-cycle of claims, are just as relevant to our clients in other jurisdictions.

Matt Andrews, Partner in our Sydney office, says: “I have seen the revolutionary impact KLAiM has had on Kennedys’ clients across the world.

“The Australian extension of KLAiM is built to allow rapid development for all Australian jurisdictions and we are already seeing significant interest from local insurer clients.

“I am really looking forward to working with them to see how KLAiM can transform their claims processes and, ultimately, help them use lawyers less.”

The system continues to evolve and has huge potential for further growth – if there is a process, it can be modelled for KLAiM, which is part of a suite of innovative online products that form Kennedys’ Innovations Toolkit.
