Sultanate of Oman

Sultanate of Oman

Providing commercial legal advice and representation to domestic and international clients, our office in Muscat extends Kennedys' Middle East regional offering to the East coast of the Arabian Peninsula.

Our Oman practice specialises in insurance and reinsurance, construction and engineering, commercial dispute resolution and advisory services (local courts, arbitration and other ADR methods), transportation, infrastructure, utilities, regulatory/fraud and cybercrime.

Our lawyers support the legal and business communities in which they serve by offering and providing guest lectures and speaking engagements. They also sit as arbitrators either on an ad hoc basis, or with leading institutions in Oman, the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.

Our construction team acts in both non-contentious/front end and contentious matters. The team has an excellent track record for innovative, commercially aware and specialist advice, on all types of construction, utilities and infrastructure, and engineering projects.

We handle all types of construction disputes and are instructed in relation to prestigious and highly publicised projects in the Sultanate, across the GCC, Middle East and Africa. On the non-contentious side, we advise funders, developers, employers, contractors and consultants on a range of commercial matters including procurement, drafting and negotiating contracts, development and finance agreements, performance bonds and guarantees, and consultant appointments.

Utilities and infrastructure

An increasing part of our construction practice includes advising independent project companies, governments and regulators in relation to their utility and infrastructure projects, including both non-contentious/front end matters (such as advising on and drafting contract suites for major developments) and contentious issues (including project related claims, insurance claims) and assisting with/defending regulatory investigations and prosecutions.

Our lawyers have been instructed in relation to independent power projects, water desalination and treatment plants, oil refineries, airports, ports, hospitals and highways in Oman and across the GCC, the Middle East and Africa.

Dispute resolution

Our dispute resolution lawyers are experienced in all forms of commercial disputes, from litigation, arbitration (domestic and international, institutional and ad hoc), to alternative dispute resolution in either Arabic or English.

Our dispute resolution offering covers a range of industry sectors including, real estate, commercial, construction utilities and infrastructure, insurance, aviation and transportation.

Our team members sit as arbitrators either on an ad hoc basis or under the auspices of leading arbitration institutions.

Through our associated firm, Nasser Al Shamli, Advocates & Legal Consultants, we have full audience rights before the Omani Courts.

Insurance and reinsurance

Insurance is our core business globally and Kennedys is recognised as a leading firm in the reinsurance and insurance sector.

Our Muscat team specialises in policy drafting, coverage advice and claims defence. We are experienced in all major lines of insurance and reinsurance, including aviation, business interruption, commercial, construction, crime, cyber, directors’ and officers’ liability, energy, financial institutions and financial lines, life and health, marine, product liability, professional indemnity and property.

Our client base includes intermediaries, local and international insurers and reinsurers, global composites, Lloyd’s syndicates and self-insuring entities.

Our lawyers have been instructed by banks and financial institutions, employers and commercial entities, advising them on fraud prevention, representing them in public prosecution investigations and criminal court cases as well as successfully recovering their defrauded money from around the world through the Kennedys global network and/or our connections with other law firms specialising in this field.

Cybercrime knows no boundaries, which is why our global breach response offering is so important to our ability to provide immediate and rounded advice to our clients. In addition to Muscat and Dubai, we have a dedicated network of cyber lawyers in our offices located across Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, the United States and Bermuda. This allows us to respond swiftly and seamlessly to a cyber event wherever it might be and whenever it occurs.

Aviation, transport and logistics

Our team provides legal solutions for the aviation industry involving: contract services, compliance and risk management, consumer/passenger related matters, aircraft financing and leasing, aircraft and engine maintenance, litigation, regulatory and insurance.

We handle a range of wet and dry shipping and international trade matters including: cargo claims, casualties, charterparty disputes, ship arrests, commodity disputes, marine insurance and shipbuilding, and third party liability claims for property damage and personal injury.

An excellent team of construction and dispute lawyers who have deep understanding of the industry and a commercial focus.
