Mark Lloyd

Mark is a Partner in Kennedys’ London office who specialises in marine insurance and shipping. He qualified in England and Wales in 1994 with a major international marine law firm and joined Waltons & Morse in 1997. Waltons merged with Kennedys in 2016.
He handles salvage (Lloyd’s Open Form and commercial/common law) and general average (GA) matters together with carriage of goods disputes (including liability, contractual issues and recoveries).

Mark specialises in insurance (marine and non-marine) coverage disputes and litigation, including piracy, misappropriation and other policy issues, including pleasure craft and ports and terminals involving both litigation and contractual issues.
Mark’s many years’ experience in the marine field (on both the cargo and hull side) covers, amongst others, issues of jurisdiction, limitation, collision, unseaworthiness and the International Safety Management Code. Mark’s clients are primarily worldwide insurers (including Lloyd’s syndicates and the company market) upon liability and coverage issues, including drafting policy wordings.

He was also heavily engaged in many of the Gulf of Aden piracy cases since early 2008. He has been involved in most of the major incidents and in vessels attacked off the coasts of Nigeria and Benin.

Mark has worked also on business globally including the US and across Asia, having spent part of his professional career in Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam.

He has presented on many topics including piracy, Lloyd’s Open Form, the Rotterdam Rules and the Institute Cargo Clauses in many jurisdictions and forums including to the International Union of Marine Insurance, Lloyd’s, London International Shipping Week and insurers worldwide.

Mark was also retained as a leading foreign expert to advise the Zurich International Shipping and Financial Research and Development Centre for the Shanghai and Pudong New Area Government on aspects of marine, insurance and cluster centre development.

Mark is a non-executive director of Maritime London, chairman of the Admiralty Solicitors Group, a member of the organising committee of the London marine Cargo Dinner, a supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association, a subscriber member of the Association of Average Adjusters and a member of the British Maritime Law Association, British Insurance Law Association and Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL).
