Q&A

Why did you decide to get into law?

I got into law by eliminating courses and degrees that I had absolutely no interest for! I have never looked back since and thoroughly enjoy how dynamic practice has been for me.

What is interesting about working for a global insurance law firm?

As my practice in maritime / shipping law involves marine and transport insurance amongst others, being in a global insurance law firm is extremely exciting where I am frequently exposed to international claims. The support from our Kennedys offices worldwide has been nothing short of amazing, where I actively collaborate with colleagues across our various offices.

What challenges do you face in your job?

The daily challenge of having to provide solutions to clients no matter the problem presented within a short space of time – this is however also what keeps the job interesting! Further, as a female in a male-dominated industry, there is an added challenge of having to ‘prove your worth’ in order to be heard. I have since learnt that as long as you are confident and competent in your job, being a female should in no manner hinder the work that you do.

What advice would you give someone starting out a career in law?

Make a deliberate effort to understand the intricacies of each case and have the big picture in mind, instead of simply rushing to complete the tasks assigned in a mechanical fashion. This will give greater meaning to your practice and perhaps also propel you in your career in law.
