Matthew Smith is an associate at Kennedys’ Cyber and Data Privacy team. His practice focuses on providing strategic counsel to clients experiencing data privacy and security incidents. This includes orchestrating and coordinating forensic investigations, systems restoration and remediation, data review, and legal analysis, in furtherance of determining and reducing client’s exposure to legal, regulatory or contractual liability.
Matthew advises clients on a wide range of privacy and security incidents, such as ransomware attacks, fraudulent payments/wire fraud, business email compromises (BECs), inadvertent disclosures and other network intrusions.
Matthew leverages his expertise in U.S. privacy laws, legal proceedings, various industry standards, and emerging cybersecurity threats to deliver strategic, up to date legal counsel to clients. He provides counsel to a variety of clients across industry sectors, and tailors his approach to balance unique client operational needs with compliance requirements.
Before joining Kennedys, Matthew worked at a leading data privacy and cybersecurity firm where he developed his skillset as an incident response consultant. Matthew also has prior experience as a litigator specifically in employment and labor law.
