Mia is a Special Counsel in Kennedys’ Melbourne office. Mia has nearly 20 years’ experience in health law. She has acted for plaintiffs, as well as defendants in personal injury claims arising from medical treatment.

Mia now specialises in assisting healthcare practitioners with disciplinary investigations conducted by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and regularly represents practitioners who are referred by their relevant Board to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

Mia also has extensive experience assisting practitioners with Coronial investigations and inquests, regularly appearing on their behalf at the Coroners Court of Victoria.

Mia has been instructed to assist practitioners in criminal matters, and has appeared for practitioners in the Human Rights List at VCAT.

Work highlights

  • Successfully contesting allegations made by the Medical Board of Australia against a practitioner regarding inappropriate and non-consensual touching. VCAT concluded that the allegations made by the Medical Board could not be sustained.
  • Managing complex multi-party proceedings in VCAT, successfully negotiating agreed positions between the Medical Board and her client.
  • Successfully defending an application for adverse costs orders brought by the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Acting for a medical practitioner in the appeal of Coronial findings, which findings were the subject of media scrutiny and adverse publicity.
