Daniel Lockwood, Associate
I begin each day with a coffee and review new emails to see what, if anything, requires immediate attention. Once I assess the primary goals and schedule for the day, I prepare for work and proceed to either the home or office, depending on the needs for the day. Today I am working from the office in Beecave, my commute is 45 minutes through rural Texas hill country by car.
On arriving at the office, I meet with my managing partner and greet coworkers. With another cup of coffee, I proceed to the tasks of the day, which include client conference calls, video conferences, hearings, client emails, legal research, motions practice, discovery, taking and defending depositions, internal team meetings, and coverage analyses.
Some new work requires urgent, immediate attention that may require further adjustment, if possible, of the targets already set for that day. Other new work can be folded into the existing work plan.
The office is located near several restaurants, and I order take out to eat in office unless the Austin team coordinated a team building lunch.
As a senior associate in a small office in a large state, I receive assignments involving Texas coverage or litigation from a variety of offices across the country and globe. My legal work includes cases or analyses from team members in London, China, New York, New Jersey, Chicago, and San Francisco. The offices span several time zones.
At the end of the day, I review the targets hit and which remain outstanding, which may dictate whether more time is recommended before closing work. Twice a week I reserve a 5:30 departure to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu if possible.
